Karachi launches major drain cleaning plan before monsoon

KARACHI: Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has launched a citywide plan to clean and desilt major stormwater drains ahead of the monsoon season, with Mayor Murtaza Wahab saying the move is aimed at maintaining the smooth flow of rainwater and lowering the risk of urban flooding.

The decision was made at a high-level meeting chaired by the mayor, where officials reviewed ongoing development schemes and the performance of municipal services. The meeting also discussed monsoon preparedness, urban infrastructure and steps needed to strengthen the city’s drainage network.

During the briefing, KMC Municipal Commissioner Abrar Jafar told the meeting that tenders for cleaning and desilting major drains had already been issued and that bids would be opened on Monday. He said work would begin as soon as the procurement process was completed so that major drains could be cleared before the rains begin.

Jafar also said KMC has earmarked Rs6 billion for the operation across the city, describing the allocation as part of the civic body’s effort to protect residents and infrastructure during the rainy season. Mayor Wahab directed officials to bring in third-party consultants for transparent monitoring, quality checks and timely completion of the work. He also stressed strict oversight to ensure public funds are used properly and that the work meets required standards.

District-wise allocations shared at meeting

KMC Financial Advisor Gulzar Abro presented a district-wise breakdown of the allocated funds. According to the plan, District Central has been assigned Rs680 million, while District West and Keamari will each receive Rs700 million.

The allocation includes Rs560 million for South-I and Rs650 million for South-II after the bifurcation of the district. District East has been allotted Rs730 million, District Korangi Rs700 million and District Malir Rs580 million.

In addition to district allocations, the plan sets aside Rs740 million and Rs630 million for critical drainage points across the city that require special attention, according to details shared in the meeting.
