Falak Shabir calls for ban on short dresses, internet quickly shows him the mirror

Singer Falak Shabir has sparked a wave of backlash online after requesting Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to introduce a law banning short dresses in public spaces.

The singer made the comment on his Instagram Stories while reacting to a fact-check about a viral claim regarding a ban on vapes and pods in Punjab. While clarifying that no such ban exists, he went on to make a personal appeal about public clothing standards.

“As a father of two daughters,” he wrote, urging authorities to restrict short dresses in bazaars and streets, warning that otherwise society would face “cultural destruction.”

The statement quickly went viral, with criticism growing online almost immediately. Many users pointed out what they saw as contradictions between his remarks and his public work, including his music videos where he has featured international female models and dancers, including white women in stylised performance scenes.

That contrast became a major talking point, with users calling out perceived double standards.

One user wrote, “😂😂 concert pr b pabandi lgai jye yeh Islam k khilaf ha (Ban concerts too then, those are against Islam),” reflecting the broader argument that restrictions should not be selective.

Another user simply said, “Double standards,” highlighting the perceived contradiction in a blunt way.

One more comment read, “What a bizarre statement/request by Falak Shabir. The irony and double standards 😵‍💫,” showing frustration with the inconsistency many saw in his message.

“Rhta ye family k sath London mein hai, isko yhan ka dress code kesy bother kr rha ha (He lives in London with his family, how is the dress code here bothering him),” another user added, pointing toward the disconnect between his lifestyle and demand.

Overall, the reactions show a split but heavily critical online response — where the issue is less just about dress regulation, and more about credibility, consistency, and public image. While a small group supported his call for stricter dress laws, the dominant narrative online has centered around perceived hypocrisy and selective morality
