Dirty teeth, dirty faces’: Theatre director makes demeaning, stereotypical remarks about Karachi actors

Pakistani theatre director Dawar Mehmood has sparked a wave of controversy online after his recent remarks about the physical appearance and grooming of actors, particularly those working in theatre.

During a podcast appearance, Mehmood argued that while acting talent is essential, the television industry places strong emphasis on screen presentation and grooming. In doing so, he made comments suggesting that many “Karachi-based actors have dirty teeth and dirty faces” and are unable to transition into television roles due to a lack of attention to appearance.

He further stated that such performers often remain confined to minor or stereotypical roles such as thieves, beggars, or pickpockets because they do not meet what he described as on-screen aesthetic standards.

The remarks quickly spread across social media, triggering a sharply divided response from audiences and industry observers.

Many criticised the comments as disrespectful toward theatre professionals, arguing that stage acting prioritises performance, expression, and physical presence over polished visual appearance. Some users went as far as calling the director “foolish” and questioned his professional ethics.

Others, however, defended his viewpoint, suggesting that he was highlighting an uncomfortable reality within the entertainment industry, where television casting often prioritises grooming and camera-friendly looks over raw talent. Supporters described his remarks as “spitting facts,” while also pointing out that even established actors sometimes lack proper grooming standards.

The debate further escalated as some online users brought up unrelated grievances, with criticism directed at Mehmood over alleged financial disputes with workers, further intensifying the online backlash.

The discussion continues to trend across platforms, reflecting a broader conversation about talent, appearance, and opportunity within Pakistan’s entertainment industry.
