Aamer Sohail slammed for calling paan spit Karachi’s 'identity' on live TV

Aamer Sohail is facing widespread backlash after a remark about Karachi during a live Pakistan Super League (PSL) broadcast went viral.

The controversy erupted during a match between Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars, when the production team aired a video comparing the two cities. Responding on commentary, Sohail said an “essential” part of Karachi had been left out.

“One thing our director forgot to show is that the thing you see most in Karachi is paan ki pichkariyan,” he said, adding that without it, the city wasn’t being represented correctly.

The comment quickly spread online and drew sharp criticism, with many calling it disrespectful and reductive. Social media users accused Sohail of reducing Pakistan’s largest city and financial hub to a stereotype associated with poor civic behaviour.

Several viewers described the remark as “vile” and “ignorant,” while others demanded an apology. Some went further, calling for Sohail to be removed from the commentary panel altogether.

The phrase “paan ki pichkari” refers to the public spitting of paan, often linked to littering and hygiene concerns. Using it as a defining symbol of Karachi struck many as a cheap attempt at humour that crossed into insult.

As the backlash continues, the incident has once again highlighted how quickly live commentary can spiral — and how audiences are increasingly unwilling to let such remarks slide.
