Bondi Beach shooting hero charged with assaulting father in Sydney

SYDNEY: A Sydney man who was widely credited with helping save lives during last year’s Bondi Beach mass shooting has been charged with assaulting his father, according to police and local media reports.

Ahmed al Ahmed, 44, drew national attention in December after disarming one of the attackers during what authorities have described as an antisemitic terrorist attack. The shooting left 15 people dead and dozens injured.

New South Wales police told AFP that officers received a report on Sunday, March 15, 2026, about an alleged assault at a home in Bankstown on Tuesday, March 9, 2026. Police said a 44-year-old man was charged this week with assault and stalking, and is due to appear in court on June 29. Australian police do not normally identify charged individuals to the media.

According to local media, including the ABC, the man charged was Ahmed. He had previously been hailed as a hero for his actions during the Bondi Beach attack, later meeting Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, while a fundraising campaign launched for him collected more than $1 million. Local media also reported that last month Ahmed’s two brothers appeared in a Sydney court over allegations that they had tried to pressure him into handing over part of the money.
