Second call this week underscores deepening Pakistan-Qatar coordination
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his Qatari counterpart Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani on Sunday exchanged views on the evolving regional situation and reaffirmed their “shared commitment” to supporting “constructive dialogue” for peace in the Middle East.
The reaffirmation came during a telephonic conversation between the two leaders, during which they reviewed the regional situation and ongoing diplomatic efforts, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
The PMO said both sides discussed progress in ongoing peace initiatives and underscored the importance of constructive engagement by all parties to ensure their success.
In a post on X, PM Shehbaz Sharif said he was “delighted to receive a telephone call from my brother […] earlier today”.
“We exchanged views on the evolving regional situation and reaffirmed our shared commitment to support all ongoing efforts aimed at promoting lasting peace, stability, and constructive dialogue across the region,” the premier said.
He also conveyed his “sincere appreciation” to Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for his “wise leadership” and for Qatar’s continued support to Pakistan’s efforts for regional peace and stability through dialogue and diplomacy.
PM Shehbaz further said he looked forward to the Qatari Emir’s visit to Pakistan “very soon”.
In its statement, the PMO emphasised the “depth of brotherly relations” between Pakistan and Qatar, noting that both sides reviewed ongoing peace efforts and underscored the need for constructive engagement by all stakeholders to ensure progress.
It added that the Emir’s visit would help further strengthen and expand the long-standing Pakistan-Qatar partnership.

He stressed the need for all parties to respond positively to these efforts to create conditions conducive to progress in negotiations leading to a comprehensive agreement and sustainable peace in the region.
The conversation marks the second phone call between PM Shehbaz Sharif and Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani this week. It also follows the Qatari Prime Minister’s meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy on the Middle East Steve Witkoff during his visit to the United States.
Rubio said he discussed “US support for Qatar’s defence”, while Qatar’s Foreign Ministry noted that “Pakistani mediation aimed at reducing escalation” also came under discussion.
Iran’s formal response to latest United States proposal
The conversation also coincides with Iran’s formal presentation of its response to the latest United States proposal, conveyed via Pakistan, aimed at ending the ongoing conflict, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), which cited a source familiar with the matter.

IRNA reported that under the proposed framework, the current phase of negotiations is focused exclusively on cessation of hostilities in the region.
It further stated that Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson had earlier said Tehran’s views and considerations on the US proposal would be conveyed after internal review and final deliberations.
Pakistan had initially positioned itself as a facilitator in the peace process between Tehran and Washington after the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28, triggering a conflict that contributed to a global fuel crisis. The White House and Iran later acknowledged Pakistan as the “sole mediator” in the process.
The first round of historic indirect US-Iran talks, held in Islamabad on April 11–12, ended without agreement but also without collapse, as a Pakistan-brokered ceasefire was subsequently extended indefinitely by US President Donald Trump.
While Pakistan continues efforts to bring the US and Iran back to the negotiating table, the diplomatic impasse persists.
