Four killed in Karachi accidents involving heavy vehicles

KARACHI: Four people, including a 10-year-old boy, lost their lives in separate incidents involving heavy vehicles in different parts of the city, traffic police said on Tuesday.

According to traffic police, one of the incidents took place in Ibrahim Hyderi, where Mehboob Ahmed was travelling on a motorcycle with his children when another motorcycle being driven recklessly suddenly came in front of him near the Benazir Chowk area. Police said Ahmed applied the brakes, causing the motorcycle to lose balance.

As a result, his minor son, Abdul Musawar, fell onto the road. A truck bearing registration number JZ-4464, which was coming from behind, ran over the child, leaving him critically injured. He was shifted to Indus Hospital, where he later died during treatment.

In another incident, a 50-year-old labourer was killed at Fish Harbour. Traffic police said Abdul Majeed was working at Barf Khana in Ibrahim Hyderi when a truck with registration number TAL-046 hit him. He suffered critical injuries and was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where doctors pronounced him dead.

Earlier, late on Monday night, two sisters were killed in Nazimabad after a heavy vehicle ran over them. Officials said the two were riding on a motorcycle being driven by their underage brother on Hakim Ibn-i-Sina Road in Nazimabad-2.

Traffic police said road conditions in the area had become dangerous because carpeting work was under way, leaving the surface rough and uneven. They added that sewage on the left side of the road had further worsened the situation. The motorcycle slipped, causing both women to fall onto the road, where they came under the tyres of an oil tanker approaching from behind.

The two were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital but died during treatment. They were identified as Ester, 17, and Angel, 21.

Central SSP Dr Mohammed Imran Khan said the victims were sisters, while the underage rider remained unharmed. He added that the oil tanker and its driver, Maroof Shah, had been taken into custody. According to the officer, the driver held a valid licence and the vehicle’s tracking system was functional.
