Islamabad talks raises hopes of breakthrough in Iran-US standoff

ISLAMABAD: Diplomatic activity surrounding tensions between Iran and the United States is increasingly being seen as a moment of strategic opportunity, with Pakistan stepping into a more visible mediatory role.

While recent engagement in Islamabad did not produce a formal agreement, the process itself is being interpreted by observers as meaningful progress. The talks moved beyond symbolic contact, establishing a working channel that could support further negotiations between the two sides.

According to a report by The Express Tribune, officials familiar with the developments say the extended discussions — spanning well over a day — helped narrow differences on some fronts and, crucially, led to a temporary pause in hostilities. That pause, they argue, provides a platform on which more substantive diplomacy can now build.

The effort also reflects a broader shift in Pakistan’s foreign policy approach under Shehbaz Sharif, with a stronger emphasis on active engagement rather than passive facilitation. Alongside bilateral mediation, Islamabad has also coordinated with regional players including Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Egypt to reinforce diplomatic momentum.

Even so, key sticking points remain unresolved. The situation around the Strait of Hormuz continues to pose a risk, with both Washington and Tehran maintaining firm positions on core issues. Analysts caution that any misstep in this area could quickly reverse recent gains.

Despite these uncertainties, the continuation of dialogue is being viewed as a positive signal. For Pakistan, the talks have not only created diplomatic space but also elevated its profile as a country capable of convening adversaries at a critical moment.
