The Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) government has announced the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the security situation in the region, following recent unrest that resulted in significant loss of life and property.
Commission to Probe Security Unrest
According to official statements, the decision was made on Tuesday in response to widespread protests that erupted after the reported martyrdom of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in attacks attributed to the United States and Israel on Iran. The protests led to violence across the region, with at least 13 people, including a security official, killed and over 100 injured. Both government and non-government infrastructure, as well as private properties and security installations, were reportedly vandalised during the unrest.
De-Weaponisation Campaign Announced
The GB government has also decided to launch a large-scale de-weaponisation campaign. Relevant institutions have been directed to immediately complete all necessary arrangements to carry out this initiative, according to a press release.
Curfew Remains in Place
In light of the ongoing security concerns, curfew will continue in Gilgit and Skardu until further notice. Authorities stated that limited relaxation will be allowed for movement and emergencies only.
Special Apex Committee Meeting
Meanwhile, a meeting of the Special Apex Committee was held in Gilgit under the chairmanship of the GB caretaker chief minister. The meeting reviewed the current situation and discussed measures to restore order and ensure public safety.
Officials emphasised that all steps are being taken to stabilise the region and prevent further violence. The judicial commission is expected to thoroughly investigate the causes and consequences of the recent events, with the aim of recommending measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
