Suspects in Gilgit-Baltistan security site attacks to face military courts

Suspects involved in recent attacks on military installations in Gilgit-Baltistan will be tried in military courts, according to the region's Inspector General of Police, Dr Nasir Akbar Khan. The announcement was made during a press conference held in Gilgit on Thursday.

Dr Khan stated that cases related to the violent incidents in Gilgit and Skardu, which occurred after the assassination of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during US and Israeli attacks on Iran, have been registered under anti-terrorism laws. He emphasized that the attacks were organised and carried out with planning.

The Inspector General explained that anti-Pakistan elements were attempting to create both internal and external disruption, put pressure on security resources, and provoke public sentiment. He said that it was necessary to inform the public about the current situation following the recent violence in Skardu and Gilgit.

The death toll from the clashes that erupted in the wake of Khamenei's assassination has reached 20. Law enforcement agencies have responded by forming a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to probe the incidents further.

Dr Khan reiterated the commitment of law enforcement agencies to restore peace and stability in the region. He assured that all those found involved in the attacks would be brought to justice through the legal process, specifically through military courts as per the decision taken by the authorities.

Officials have not released further details regarding the identities of the suspects or the timeline for the trials. The situation in Gilgit-Baltistan remains tense as authorities continue their investigations and security measures.
