LAHORE: A record-breaking 900,000 vehicles entered Lahore during the three-day Basant festival, while approximately 1.4 million passengers travelled on Orange Line Metro Train, Metrobus, feeder buses, electric buses, and other government transport services over two days, setting a new milestone in public mobility during the celebrations.
A special video-link meeting was convened under the supervision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, during which Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb presented a comprehensive two-day Basant report. Home Secretary Ahmad Javed Qazi, the Commissioner of Lahore, and officials from the health department, PHA, police, and security agencies also provided detailed briefings on arrangements and public safety.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed satisfaction over the security measures and overall management of the festival, noting that today marks the final day of Basant. “Kite flying will be stopped at night, and the ban on kite flying will remain in force after the conclusion of the three-day Basant festival,” she stated.
She lauded the cooperation of Lahore’s citizens during the festivities and urged the public to continue following Basant SOPs and rules on the festival’s final day as responsible participants.
Public transport usage sets new records
During the briefing, officials reported that over 600,000 passengers travelled free of cost on the Orange Line Metro Train over two days—299,000 on Friday and 305,000 on Saturday.
On the Metrobus, 143,000 passengers travelled on Friday and 135,000 on Saturday, totaling 278,000 rides. Speedo feeder buses facilitated 174,000 journeys on Friday and 182,000 on Saturday, totaling 356,000 free rides.
Electric bus feeder routes carried 15,000 passengers each day, totaling 30,000 over two days. Regional Transport Authority buses served 60,000 passengers, while Green Electric Buses offered free travel to 52,000 commuters.
Authorities further briefed that 419 buses are available for free public transport in Lahore on the festival’s final day, with the Orange Line Metro Train, Metrobus, feeder buses, and Green Electric Buses continuing free services. Additionally, 6,000 Yango rickshaws are providing free rides on behalf of the government today.
Officials have been instructed to strictly enforce safety protocols on the final day of Basant, while the chief minister reiterated that only kites and strings of approved size and standard are permitted.
