Police arrest 57 in Punjab crackdown over social media unrest

LAHORE: Punjab police have detained at least 57 individuals in an ongoing crackdown targeting those accused of fuelling unrest and spreading propaganda online following violent protests in Muridke, officials said on Wednesday.

According to media reports that quote police sources, late-night raids were carried out in Lahore, Kasur, Kamonki, Gujranwala, and Sheikhupura. The suspects are accused of using social media platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook to circulate provocative and misleading content aimed at inciting public disorder.

Authorities said they have traced 87 social media accounts allegedly linked to the campaign, while a second phase of the operation is set to begin tonight to apprehend more suspects.

A list containing over 200 names of individuals believed to be involved in the unrest has been prepared, and legal proceedings will be initiated once verification and arrests are completed, police added.

Law enforcement officials emphasised that the province-wide operation is part of broader efforts to curb online disinformation and prevent attempts to destabilise peace through digital channels.

Meanwhile, Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) chief Saad Hussain Rizvi and several party activists have been booked under terrorism and attempted murder charges following violent clashes with police in Muridke, Rawat, and Taxila.

According to the FIRs, the protesters allegedly attacked law enforcement personnel and opened fire during confrontations. SHO Inspector Shahzad Jhumat was killed in the exchange, while several other officers sustained injuries.

Police said that further arrests are expected as investigations expand into the network behind the unrest.
