China lauds Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts in ongoing Middle East crisis

ISLAMABAD: China lauded Pakistan’s proactive role in seeking regional peace through diplomatic channels, particularly in light of the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict.

This recognition came on Tuesday as tensions in the Middle East escalated following a missile strike by Iran on the United States’ Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.

At an emergency session held on Sunday, the United Nations Security Council saw a joint call by China, Russia, and Pakistan for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the region. The Chinese ambassador to Pakistan, Jiang Zaidong, met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad, where they discussed the evolving security situation and mutual interests.

Ambassador Jiang commended Pakistan’s consistent diplomatic efforts, especially at international forums, to find a peaceful resolution to regional challenges. He emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy, highlighting Pakistan’s active engagement in supporting regional stability.

The Prime Minister also met with the ambassadors of Saudi Arabia and Qatar to discuss the rapidly deteriorating situation in the region, especially following Iran’s missile retaliation for recent US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

In his meeting with the ambassadors, Prime Minister Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia and Qatar, emphasizing that diplomacy was the only viable path to lasting peace.

During the meeting with the Chinese envoy, the Prime Minister highlighted the strong partnership between Pakistan and China. He expressed appreciation for China’s support, particularly in stabilizing Pakistan’s economy through initiatives under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Discussions also centered on upcoming projects, including the ML-1 railway upgrade, the realignment of the Karakoram Highway, and further cooperation in agriculture, industry, and IT sectors.

The Foreign Office issued a statement on Tuesday, condemning the violations of national sovereignty and territorial integrity and stressing that dialogue is the only solution to the region’s escalating conflicts.

The statement reiterated the need for restraint from all parties to avoid further destabilization and urged for immediate de-escalation of tensions.

Ambassador Jiang reassured the Prime Minister of China’s continued support for Pakistan, affirming their strategic partnership and commitment to regional peace and stability.
