KARACHI: Students, teachers, parents, and civil society members gathered outside a private girls’ school on Thursday to demand justice after an alleged violent assault on female teachers. The protest disrupted traffic in the area, prompting a heavy police presence to maintain order.
The demonstration followed a May 26 incident at Al-Badar School, where a student, Eshal Shahid, arrived with her parents and her maternal uncle, Abdul Hafeez, a police official posted at Kalakot police station in Lyari. Protesters said Hafeez entered the school carrying a handgun, physically assaulted female teachers, used abusive language, and harassed staff, causing distress among teachers and students.
Protesters criticised the school administration for its alleged failure to intervene and protect staff during the incident, questioning how a school that promotes Islamic values allowed such behaviour. They also voiced concerns about student safety in such an environment.
The SHO of Jamshed Quarters police station came to the site to negotiate with protesters, while additional officers were deployed to prevent escalation. Demonstrators demanded the immediate arrest of Abdul Hafeez, legal action against those responsible, and accountability from the school administration.
