Sindh not to leave flood victims in lurch: CM Murad

BADIN: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Thursday declared that the provincial government will never leave the flood victims alone, saying though the entire country was affected by heavy rains and floods this monsoon season, Sindh province was more affected than other province.

“We had a need for 1.5 million tents after heavy rainfall and floods to provide shelter to people from evacuated from flooded area of the province but unfortunately we couldn’t meet the requirements due to delivery issues of the goods”, the CM claimed while talking to media here during a visit to Badin on Thursday.

CM Murad informed that Badin administration has requested for provision of more than 50,000 tents to settle the flood affectees but unfortunately tents were out of stock current. “We are ready to provide them tents and striving to ensure that the tents are provided but stock was not available.”

The Sindh chief minister deplored that they were receiving less items than as compared to requirement, adding he acknowledged genuine concerns of the flood affected regarding the gaps in relief activities. “The Sindh government wants to carry out developmental work in rural areas,” the CM vowed.

He said that LBOD has mostly affected the people of Badin as it’s brought the water of different district including Shaheed Benazir Abad, Sanghar, Mirpur Khas and Umerkot districts. He said that LBOD was not designed for draining out rainwater, saying that its designed water flow was fixed as 4,600 cusecs, but more than 12,000 cusec water was flowing through LBOD, which unfortunately has caused havoc in district Badin.

He claimed that one breach in MMD link canal was plugged but second one was causing problems. He assured that within three days, it would be plugged at all costs. The chief minister directed the officers concerned to expedite dewatering so the affected people could be resettled in their home.

The Sindh CM said that the provincial was working to prepare a strategy for rehabilitation of flood affected people houses, adding that he said that LBOD had affected natural flow of the drain water.

“We were rich in the wheat production a decade ago but unfortunately now we become its importers due to climate change”, the CM regretted.

Murad Ali Shah appealed to developed countries to come forward to assist flood affected and alleviate their sufferings.

Earlier, the Sindh CM went to offer condolence with Sami family living in a relief camp along the roadside over the killing of their three persons by a loader near Amir Ali Shah village. On the occasion, he announced compensation for the bereaved family and expressed sympathies with the bereaved heirs.

Other hand, Badin Deputy Commissioner Agha Shahnawaz Khan briefed the Sindh CM regarding losses and damages caused by floods in the district.
