ECP sets April 5 by-election for NA-256 Khuzdar seat

QUETTA: The Election Commission of Pakistan has issued the schedule for the by-election in NA-256 Khuzdar, with polling set to take place on April 5 following the vacancy created by the resignation of Sardar Akhtar Mengal.

According to the official notification, the public notice for the election will be published on February 18.

Candidates will be able to submit nomination papers from February 20 to February 24, while the provisional list of candidates will be released on February 25. Election symbols are scheduled to be allotted on March 18.

The commission has appointed the Deputy Commissioner of Khuzdar as the District Returning Officer to oversee the electoral process in the constituency.

The NA-256 seat became vacant after Mengal’s resignation was accepted by Ayaz Sadiq earlier this week. Mengal had tendered his resignation in September 2024, citing the political and security situation in Balochistan and what he described as limited space for elected representatives to effectively raise provincial concerns in Parliament.

After the acceptance of his resignation, Mengal stated on social media that he had not drawn any salary, allowances, or used official residence facilities since stepping down, adding that he had vacated the Parliament Lodges more than a year ago.
