Achakzai seeks PM’s intervention for Imran Khan’s medical checkup by reputed doctors

ISLAMABAD: Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Mahmood Khan Achakzai on Tuesday wrote to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, seeking his “personal intervention” to ensure a comprehensive medical examination of PTI founder and former prime minister Imran Khan by doctors of his own choice.

The letter, shared by the Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP) on X, expressed “utmost urgency” over Imran Khan’s health, noting that he is currently detained at Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi. Achakzai said recent medical check-ups had reportedly been conducted without the knowledge or presence of Imran Khan’s personal medical team or family members.

“His personal doctors, who are fully aware of his medical history, were not informed,” the letter stated, stressing that a full medical examination by “trusted doctors” was critically needed to properly assess and manage his health in line with medical ethics, legal obligations and fundamental human rights.

Achakzai named three physicians — Dr Muhammad Aasim Yusuf, Dr Prof Mazhar Ishaq and Dr Prof Aamir Awan — and urged that they be allowed to conduct the examination without delay. He appealed to the prime minister to intervene personally to ensure access and safeguard the former premier’s well-being.

The letter comes days after the government acknowledged that Imran Khan had undergone a medical procedure at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims). Information Minister Attaullah Tarar told Geo News that Imran Khan was taken from Adiala Jail to Pims on the night of January 24, where his eyes were examined and a “20-minute” procedure was carried out with his written consent.

Tarar said the former premier was returned to jail with post-procedure instructions. Subsequently, Pims Executive Director Prof Dr Rana Imran Sikander confirmed that the procedure was completed smoothly, adding that Imran Khan remained vitally stable throughout and was discharged with routine follow-up advice.

The PTI, however, strongly criticised what it termed the “secret transfer” of Imran Khan to Pims, alleging that his family and party leadership were deliberately kept uninformed and that he was denied access to his personal physicians.
