New York city hit by heaviest snowfall in years as storm eases impact

A strong winter storm swept through the New York metropolitan area from Friday into Saturday, bringing the city its most significant snowfall in nearly four years while stopping short of the worst early forecasts. The storm disrupted post-Christmas travel across the region and marked a sharp change after several relatively mild winters.

Winter storm warnings were issued across the tri-state area, though snowfall totals varied widely. Parts of the Hudson Valley and sections of Connecticut recorded heavier accumulations of six to eight inches, while upstate New York saw even higher totals.

New York City and northern New Jersey experienced lighter snowfall than initially predicted, with most areas receiving between three and five inches. Meteorologists attributed the reduced accumulation to an unexpected mix of sleet and a temporary dry slot that weakened the storm over the city.

Despite the lower totals in urban areas, the storm caused widespread disruption. New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New Jersey acting Governor Tahesha Way declared states of emergency, while New York City issued a travel advisory urging residents to limit non-essential movement.

Hundreds of flights were cancelled or delayed at major airports in the region, and public transportation services were affected. NYC Ferry routes and parts of the subway system, including the B train, faced suspensions or early closures as conditions worsened.

The storm began Friday afternoon on December 26 and gradually tapered off by Saturday morning, December 27. Even with reduced snowfall, Central Park likely recorded its largest single snowfall since January 2022.

Authorities advised continued caution as cleanup operations remained underway, warning that hazardous travel conditions could persist while crews worked to clear roads and restore normal services.
