China hopes U.S. will safeguard legitimate rights, interests of Chinese students, says foreign ministry

BEIJING: China hopes the United States will stop unwarranted harassment, interrogation and deportation of Chinese students, and effectively safeguard their legitimate and lawful rights and interests, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Wednesday.

Guo made the remarks when asked to comment on U.S. President Donald Trump’s statement that he would allow 600,000 Chinese students into American universities.

“We hope the U.S. side will implement President Trump’s statement of welcoming Chinese students in real terms,” Guo said, adding that educational exchanges and cooperation are conducive to enhancing interactions and understanding among the people of various countries.
