The absence of student unions in Pakistan’s educational institutions continues to weaken our democratic foundation and restrict the political grooming of our youth. Student unions, once the backbone of political activism and national discourse, were banned decades ago under the guise of curbing violence. However, this silence has cost the nation more than it has gained.
In a time when our democratic institutions are struggling, it is critical to empower the youth not only academically but also politically. Student unions provide a platform for leadership, dialogue, debate and accountability. Countries with strong democratic traditions actively encourage student representation — why must Pakistan remain the exception?
The common argument that student unions incite violence overlooks the fact that violence thrives where constructive engagement is absent. Instead of a blanket ban, regulatory frameworks and codes of conduct should be introduced to ensure peaceful and productive union activity.
The government and educational authorities must revisit this outdated policy. Reviving student unions will not only cultivate future leaders but also foster a sense of ownership and responsibility among students which are values essential for any democratic society.
