Pakistan, India Hold First DGMO-Level Talks Amid Ceasefire

Pakistan and India have conducted their first round of talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) through a secure hotline, marking a significant step in de-escalating tensions between the two countries. This exchange of communication comes after several days of heightened military activity, which brought both nations to the brink of a full-scale conflict.

The dialogue follows a ceasefire agreement between Pakistan and India, brokered through diplomatic efforts led by the United States. US President Donald Trump first announced the ceasefire on Saturday, which was later confirmed by leaders from both countries, including Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The ceasefire came after a series of missile strikes, drone incursions, and retaliatory military operations that raised fears of a larger war.

Tensions escalated after a deadly attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), which claimed the lives of 26 civilians. India accused Pakistan-based elements without providing evidence, while Pakistan rejected the allegations. In retaliation, India took aggressive actions, including closing the Wagah border, revoking Pakistani visas, and suspending the Indus Waters Treaty—moves that Pakistan condemned as acts of war.

As military actions continued, Pakistan launched Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos on May 6–7, claiming to have downed five Indian jets, including Rafales, and intercepted 77 Israeli-made Harop drones. Despite the military escalation, backchannel diplomacy, particularly through US Secretary Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance, played a pivotal role in facilitating the ceasefire.

Following the announcement of the ceasefire, both countries agreed to suspend all military activity across land, air, and sea. However, ceasefire violations have been reported on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC), raising concerns over the stability of the truce.
