Jake Gyllenhaal has revealed that he contracted a staph infection following an on-set injury during the filming of a fight scene for his upcoming movie, Road House.
The 43-year-old actor stars alongside professional Irish fighter Conor McGregor in director Doug Liman’s remake of the 1989 cult classic, originally featuring Patrick Swayze.
During a recent episode of Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, where he appeared alongside McGregor, Gyllenhaal recounted cutting his hand on glass while filming a bar fight scene.
“We were fighting on the floor, around tables, and near glass,” the Donnie Darko actor recalled, mentioning how he accidentally placed his hand on a sharp piece of glass at the bar.
“I felt the glass pierce my hand. I remember the sensation and thought, ‘That’s a lot of glass,’” Gyllenhaal explained.
While such injuries are common on film sets, Gyllenhaal’s injury turned out to be more severe as it led to a staph infection.
Staph infections are often caused by bacteria commonly found on the skin and can become life-threatening if not treated promptly, as per Mayo Clinic.
“Thankfully, I was vigilant in taking care of myself during filming, and I didn’t sustain any major injuries,” the Nightcrawler actor noted, attributing his safety to the film’s stunt team.
