HERAT, Afghanistan: Local sources on Wednesday confirmed that the disgruntled commander of the Taliban, Maulvi Mehdi Mujahid, was arrested and killed by the Taliban in Herat province of Afghanistan.

Mehdi Mujahid, an ethnic Hazara, was arrested on Wednesday in the village of Bunyad, Khesan district of Herat province, and then executed, sources said.

According to the sources, Maulvi Mehdi Mujahid was planning to travel to Iran but was arrested by the Taliban. The Ministry of Defense of the Afghanistan Emirate said that the border forces of the group killed Maulvi Mehdi Mujahid on Iran-Afghanistan border.

Maulvi Mehdi was the only Hazara commander of the Taliban in Balkhab district of Sar-e-Pul province, who went to Balkhab district of the Sar-i-Pul Province after developing differences with the decisions of the Taliban leadership in Kabul and fought with the Taliban group after the Taliban attacked the district. However,  Maulvi Mehdi was defeated and ran away towards Afghan-Iran bordering areas.

Meanwhile, prominent ethnic Hazara leader, Haji Mohammad Mohaqiq, has condemned the killing of Moulvi Mehdi.

“It is worth mentioning that executing a person in a cold-blood while he was not taken from the war front and was an unarmed traveler or emigrant is against the religious teachings and is considered a war crime according to the international law,” he concluded.
