Pakistan Railways on fast track to modernization under PM Shehbaz’s reforms: Abbasi

• Railways minister says sweeping reforms transforming the network into a modern, efficient and passenger-friendly institution

• Says right major railway corridors in Punjab to be revived with modern multiple-unit trains in collaboration with provincial government

• Says historic stations in Taxila, Rawalpindi, Bhera and Lahore to be restored as part of railway heritage preservation drive

 ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi on Sunday said Pakistan Railways was steadily emerging as a symbol of reform, innovation and improved public service delivery under the leadership of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, with the government pursuing wide-ranging modernization initiatives to transform the rail network into a more efficient, reliable and passenger-friendly system.

In a post on X, the minister said the government's unwavering emphasis on performance, transparency and public welfare had laid the foundation for transforming Pakistan Railways into a modern institution, ensuring that citizens across the country benefit from improved, safer and more efficient rail services.

He said a new era of modernization and enhanced public service was unfolding under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's leadership, adding that comprehensive reforms were being implemented to strengthen operational efficiency, improve service delivery and make rail travel more reliable and convenient for passengers.

Hanif Abbasi also expressed gratitude to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif for her continued support in upgrading railway infrastructure and improving passenger services across the province.

He said cleanliness standards at railway stations were being significantly improved under the Punjab government's "Suthra Punjab" campaign, while better facilities were being provided to passengers to enhance their travel experience.

The minister said that, in collaboration with the Punjab government, work was under way to revive eight of the province's busiest railway corridors through the introduction of modern multiple-unit trains.

He further said the deployment of staff at 117 railway level crossings had enhanced operational efficiency, improved passenger convenience and played an important role in protecting precious human lives by strengthening safety measures.

Hanif Abbasi also commended the Punjab chief minister's commitment to restoring and preserving the country's historic railway stations, including Taxila, Rawalpindi, Bhera and Lahore.

He said the initiative was aimed at safeguarding Pakistan's rich railway heritage while integrating it with a modern, technologically advanced and digital future.

Reaffirming the government's commitment to the sector, the minister said Pakistan Railways would continue its modernization drive to strengthen national connectivity, support economic growth and provide every Pakistani with safe, efficient, affordable and dignified rail travel.
