McIlroy says mistakes left him work to do at British Open
Rory McIlroy opened the British Open with a two-over-par round at Royal Birkdale, leaving him seven shots off the lead. He said missed short putts and changing reads on the greens hurt his rhythm, but he remains hopeful of recovering in the second round.

LONDON: Rory McIlroy said a string of avoidable errors left him facing ground to make up after an opening two-over-par round at the British Open, though a late birdie kept him in touch heading into Friday.
The Masters champion finished his first round seven shots behind the lead at Royal Birkdale after a mixed card that featured six bogeys and four birdies. His bid to win the British Open for the first time in 12 years was not derailed on the opening day, with one of his birdies coming at the final hole after a sensational second shot.
McIlroy dropped shots at both par-threes on the front nine and also gave one away at each of the two par-fives on the back nine. He said the round was shaped by repeated lapses, even though he managed to answer several of them with birdies.
