ISLAMABAD: Azad Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Inspector General Raja Akmal said on Friday that police received reports of firing on the convoy of former AJK prime minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas in Bagh district.

According to the DIG, Ilyas’s spokesperson told authorities that one of his guards was killed in the incident, while others sustained injuries. Raja Akmal said an investigation was under way and action would be taken against those responsible for the firing.

Incident before AJK polls

The shooting took place ahead of the July 27 elections for Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s 53-member Legislative Assembly.

Earlier this month, Ilyas announced that he was joining the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party after a meeting with party president Abdul Aleem Khan and State Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Awn Chaudhary.

The move followed his resignation from the basic membership of the Pakistan Peoples Party’s AJK chapter after several days of unsuccessful talks over election tickets. The News had described the development earlier this week as a setback for the party before the upcoming AJK general elections.

Wider tensions in the region

The incident comes amid an increase in violence in the region linked to sit-ins and protests organised by the banned Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee.

The AJK government declared the JAAC a proscribed organisation under the Anti-Terrorism Act on June 5, stating that the group was involved in terrorism.

The ban was imposed days before the outfit’s planned June 9 protest, which was aimed at seeking the abolition of 12 seats in the AJK assembly reserved for refugees from Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir who migrated to Pakistan after 1947.
