IWT suspension breaches int'l law, says Sherry
Senator Sherry Rehman says India’s attempt to keep the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance violates international law. She says the treaty has no provision for unilateral suspension or termination.

ISLAMABAD: Senator Sherry Rehman on Tuesday said India’s effort to keep the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance was against international law and the established rules that govern cooperation over shared rivers.
In a statement issued in her capacity as chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Climate Change, Rehman said the treaty does not contain any clause that allows either side to suspend or end it on its own.
She said Pakistan viewed the matter with the utmost seriousness as the lower riparian state. Rehman also said the Indus Waters Treaty remained in force under international law.
The statement came as she criticised what she described as India’s continued attempt to keep the treaty in abeyance, arguing that such a step was inconsistent with the legal framework governing transboundary water cooperation.
