KARACHI: A water tanker overturned in Karachi’s Defence Phase VI on Sunday, leaving its driver dead and his two sons injured, while two police personnel and a motorcyclist were hurt in separate road accidents elsewhere in the city.
The deadliest of the three incidents took place near Rahat Commercial within the limits of Gizri police station. Rescue officials said the tanker was moving fast when it overturned while negotiating a turn and slammed into the wall of a bungalow. Three people were trapped inside the vehicle, prompting a response from police, Rescue 1122 and Chhipa teams.
According to police and rescuers, one person was found dead and two others were pulled out alive from the driver’s cabin before all three were taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. PS Gizri SHO Inspector Asghar Ali Kango identified the deceased as 50-year-old Yasir, son of Karam Din, who had been driving the tanker. The injured were named as his 24-year-old son Rizwan and 10-year-old son Huzaifa. Police said Rizwan was also employed as a cleaner.
Police said the family lives in Bilal Colony in Korangi and originally belongs to Bahawalpur. After legal formalities were completed, Yasir’s body was handed over to his heirs. The two injured relatives were reported to be out of danger.
CCTV footage of the crash showed the tanker toppling over as it took a sharp turn at speed. The damaged vehicle was later removed with a crane and taken to Gizri police station.
