QUETTA: A passenger bus travelling to Peshawar plunged into a ravine near the Balochistan-Khyber Pakhtunkhwa border on Friday, leaving at least 40 people dead and eight others injured, officials said.

The crash occurred after the vehicle passed the Dana Sar area of Balochistan’s Sherani district and crossed into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Dera Ismail Khan, officials said. In a statement, Balochistan Chief Minister’s aide for media and political affairs Shahid Rind said the death toll stood at 40, with eight people hurt.

Sherani Deputy Commissioner Wali Khan Kakar said the bus had departed Quetta with 36 passengers on board. He said additional people later boarded the vehicle after another bus broke down on the route. Kakar also confirmed the location of the accident.

The deputy commissioner said rescue teams from the district administration and ambulances reached the site immediately after the incident. Rind said rescue work began soon after the crash on the instructions of Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti.
