Man held after wife dies from torture in Jaranwala village

TOBA TEK SINGH: A woman died after she was beaten by her husband during a domestic dispute in a village in Jaranwala tehsil on Monday, police said.

According to Lundianwala police, Shahbaz Ahmad exchanged harsh words with his wife, Nida Bibi, 30, at village Soofi Di Kothi before allegedly attacking her with wooden bars. Police said the woman, who was the mother of four children, suffered critical injuries and died while being taken to Jaranwala Tehsil Headquarters Hospital.

Police said the suspect was arrested after the incident.

Life term awarded in 2023 murder case

In a separate development, Gojra Additional District and Sessions Judge Malik Muhammad Mushtaq sentenced a man to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs500,000 in a murder case.

According to the prosecution, convict Rana Muhammad Ajmal had shot Rana Haris Ali dead over old enmity at Chak 363-JB, Bahmniwala, in 2023 in the limits of Gojra Saddar police.

Special children’s school inaugurated in Faisalabad

The Maryam Nawaz School for Special Children, also described as the Center of Excellence for Special Children, has started functioning in Faisalabad.

Special Assistant to the Chief Minister Sania Ashiq inaugurated the facility along with the secretary and director general of Special Education. During the visit, she spent time with the children and said they were her top priority.

Also in Faisalabad, Adviser to the Chief Minister Zeeshan Malik visited the under-construction dialysis centre at Hilal-i-Ahmar Maternity Hospital. Commissioner Mussarat Jabeen told him that kidney patients would receive modern, quality and prompt treatment and dialysis services there. Deputy Commissioner Nadeem Nasir was also present.

UAF approves research and innovation fund

At the University of Agriculture Faisalabad, Vice Chancellor Dr Zulfiqar Ali said research should be turned into goods and services to help address the needs of industry, food security and the general public as part of progress towards a knowledge-based economy.

Addressing a steering committee meeting of the Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialisation, he said a service-driven and knowledge-based research and development framework would help convert academic work into business ventures through product commercialisation, incubation and collaboration with industry.

He also stressed the role of ORIC in building what he described as a strong ecosystem of technology, entrepreneurship and economic prosperity, adding that a stronger commercialisation framework would improve the university’s international visibility, institutional rankings and national standing.

The committee approved the establishment of the University Research and Innovation Endowment, a perpetual fund meant to provide sustainable financing for innovation and industry engagement. The fund will support prototype development, technology validation, intellectual property protection, industry collaborations through MoUs, and revenue-generating commercialisation activities. The committee also approved the ORIC Grants Manual 2026, pilot clustering of HPLCs, an ORIC performance review, strategic initiatives and a future roadmap.
