LAHORE: Lahore Police have rolled out a comprehensive security plan for the 9th of Muharram, deploying more than 11,000 officers and personnel across the provincial capital to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of mourners during processions and majalis.

According to a statement issued by Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Lahore Bilal Siddique Kamyana, extensive security arrangements have been put in place for 386 majalis and 81 mourning processions being held across the city.

He said strict implementation of the security Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued by the Punjab government, along with enforcement of restrictions imposed under Section 144, is being ensured. A complete ban on pillion riding on motorcycles will remain in force on the 9th and 10th of Muharram.

The CCPO said enforcement of the Loudspeaker Act is also being strictly monitored to prevent any violations. Shops and markets situated along procession routes will remain closed, while standing on the rooftops of buildings and commercial premises located along the routes will not be allowed.

He added that organizers and participants would be required to strictly adhere to the approved timings and designated routes for all majalis and mourning processions.

Bilal Siddique Kamyana said mourners are being provided with a robust four-tier security cover, backed by walk-through gates, metal detectors and other modern security equipment. In coordination with procession and majalis organizers, the screening and checking process for participants has been further strengthened to ensure maximum security.

He said processions and majalis are being monitored round the clock through live digital surveillance by the Punjab Safe Cities Authority and other monitoring centres.

The CCPO further said divisional SPs have been directed to maintain close coordination with peace committee members and procession organizers, while Dolphin Squad, Police Response Unit (PRU) and Elite Force teams continue intensive patrolling around majalis venues and procession routes.

Urging citizens to remain vigilant, he advised the public not to pay attention to rumours or fake news and to cooperate with law-enforcement agencies by promptly reporting any suspicious activity.

Bilal Siddique Kamyana also called upon citizens to promote unity, harmony and brotherhood during Muharram and help maintain a peaceful atmosphere across the city.
