Over 60,000 Police personnel deployed as 7th Muharram passes peacefully across Punjab

Punjab police deployed 60,000 personnel across the province on the seventh day of Muharramul Haram. Authorities monitored 1,377 processions and 3,869 majalis under Section 144, with Safe City cameras and multi-agency teams.

 LAHORE: Stringent security arrangements were ensured across Punjab, including Lahore, on the seventh day of Muharramul Haram, with more than 60,000 officers and personnel deployed to provide comprehensive security cover to mourning processions and majalis.

In a statement, a Punjab Police spokesperson said that the seventh day of Muharram passed peacefully as 60,000 officers and personnel performed security duties across the province.

A total of 1,377 mourning processions and 3,869 majalis were held across Punjab, while in Lahore alone 98 mourning processions were taken out and 435 majalis were organized. More than 27,000 community volunteers also assisted police in security arrangements for processions and gatherings across the province, the spokesperson added.

Punjab Inspector General of Police Abdul Kareem said that security across the province would remain on high alert throughout the Ashra of Muharram, with all available resources being utilized to maintain law and order. He said implementation of Section 144 imposed by the Punjab government was being strictly ensured.

The IG Punjab further said that aerial firing, display of weapons, dissemination of hate material, and provocative activities were strictly prohibited. He added that no procession or gathering would be allowed except on designated routes and at approved venues.

He said that all activities were being continuously monitored through cameras of the Safe Cities Authority and district administrations. He added that the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), Special Branch, Traffic Police, Dolphin Squad, Police Response Units (PRU), and other field formations had been deployed for Muharram security duties.

The IG directed strict enforcement of the Loudspeaker Act and said indiscriminate legal action would be taken against elements involved in spreading hate material or incitement on social media.

He further said that control rooms established in all districts were linked with the Central Police Office control room and would remain in constant coordination throughout Muharramul Haram to ensure effective monitoring and prompt response to any situation.
