HOUSTON: Cristiano Ronaldo made World Cup history on Tuesday by becoming the first men's player to score in six different editions of the tournament, finding the net for Portugal against Uzbekistan.
The Portugal captain struck from close range in the sixth minute after coming under scrutiny following a quiet display in his side's 1-1 draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo in their opening match of the competition in North America. Before the Uzbekistan game, Ronaldo had gone 10 matches in major international tournaments with no goals and one assist.
The 41-year-old had almost scored even earlier in Houston, arriving at the far post after a cross from Nuno Mendes but just failing to connect. His frustration was brief, however, as he soon converted to set the record. The goal underlined the longevity of a player whose first World Cup goal came back in 2006 against Iran.
Ronaldo, who made his international debut in 2003 and now plays for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, has remained productive at club level despite his recent dry spell in major tournaments. He scored 28 goals in 30 league games this season. The former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus forward is widely regarded as one of football's leading figures.
