Pakistani singer Tariq Tafu, best known for the iconic Punjabi hit Lahore Lahore Aye, has passed away in Lahore at the age of 58.
According to his family, Tafu suffered a sudden and severe stomach ache on Monday and was rushed to a private hospital. His condition reportedly worsened rapidly, and he suffered a cardiac arrest during treatment. Doctors were unable to revive him.
He is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters.
Funeral prayers will be offered on Wednesday at 3:30pm at Emperor’s Cemetery in Karim Block, Lahore.
Tafu rose to nationwide fame in 2004 with Lahore Lahore Aye, a song that went beyond commercial success to become a cultural identity marker for the city itself. More than two decades later, the track remains one of the most recognisable Punjabi songs associated with Lahore.
Music ran deep in his family. He was the son of legendary tabla maestro Ustad Tafu Khan and the brother of renowned composer and tabla player Ustad Wajid Tafu. Through marriage, he was also connected to ghazal legend Ghulam Ali, who was his father-in-law.
In 2025, Tafu was honoured with the Pride of Pakistan shield in recognition of his contribution to the country's music and cultural heritage.
His death has struck an emotional chord with fans, particularly because it came just a day after his final Facebook post, in which he paid tribute to his late father on Father’s Day.
With his passing, Pakistan has lost a singer whose voice became inseparable from one of the country's most beloved cities.
