ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi is due in Tehran on Saturday for high-level meetings meant to support diplomatic efforts following the recent memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said Naqvi’s visit forms part of Pakistan’s continuing efforts to help narrow outstanding differences between Tehran and Washington and sustain the momentum created by the newly announced understanding.
During the visit, Naqvi is expected to meet separately with Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The talks are expected to focus on the next stage of diplomatic engagement.
Negotiations enter critical phase
The visit comes at a sensitive point in the Iran-US process, with the initial agreement moving into a critical stage. Both sides are preparing for technical negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions relief and mechanisms to verify mutual commitments.
Iranian officials said Pakistan has played an important behind-the-scenes role in facilitating contact between Tehran and Washington in recent months. They said those efforts helped ease tensions and contributed to the memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the war.
Diplomatic sources described the upcoming negotiations as especially delicate, with political and technical issues still to be addressed before any final and legally binding agreement can be concluded.
Pakistan’s mediation role
Islamabad’s latest diplomatic engagement is intended to help avoid disruptions in the negotiation process and preserve progress made through months of mediation.
Naqvi’s meetings in Tehran are expected to take place as broader diplomatic activity continues around the Iran-US track, with attention focused on how the preliminary understanding is translated into detailed negotiations.
