ISLAMABAD/TEHRAN: Iran has “not yet” taken a final decision on signing a proposed agreement under discussion with the United States aimed at ending their months-long war, Iran’s Fars news agency reported on Sunday, even as Pakistan signalled that the deal was closer than ever and preparations were underway for an electronic signing of the document.
The development comes amid renewed volatility in the region, after the Israeli military said it launched strikes on Hezbollah targets in Beirut on Sunday, a move that could further complicate diplomatic efforts led by Pakistan, alongside Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and other regional partners, to secure an agreement intended to end the conflict that began in late February and is currently paused under a ceasefire reached on April 8.
The prospective agreement has also faced internal opposition within Iran, where some figures argue that the deal does not serve Tehran’s strategic interests and could weaken its leverage over the Strait of Hormuz — a key global energy shipping route handling roughly one-fifth of global oil flows, which has seen intermittent disruptions since the start of hostilities in late February.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has not yet taken or announced its final decision concerning the memorandum of understanding proposed during negotiations,” Fars reported, citing “a well-informed source close to the Iranian negotiating team.” The outlet is considered close to conservative circles in Iran.

US President Donald Trump had posted on social media on Saturday that the agreement with Iran was scheduled to be signed the following day, coinciding with his 80th birthday.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Islamabad was preparing for an electronic signing of the peace deal immediately after the announcement, to be followed by technical-level talks next week.

However, Iranian officials have signalled continued caution, saying the timing and final approval of the agreement remain under review.
Following the Israeli strikes on Beirut, smoke rose over the Lebanese capital, while the Civil Defense said it retrieved three bodies and six injured individuals from the rubble.
Iran signals resistance to talks
The emerging deal has drawn a sharp response from Iranian officials and hardline figures, with some arguing that continued negotiations are no longer viable under current conditions.
Iran’s chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said on Sunday there was “no point” in continuing peace talks with the United States after Israel’s strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs.
“If you do not have the will or the ability to fulfil your commitments, then there is no point in talking about continuing down this path,” he said, linking US credibility to Israel’s military actions amid ongoing efforts to finalise the agreement.
The deal, in its current form, has also been described by Israeli officials as deeply concerning, with Jerusalem viewing it as a setback to its regional objectives. The latest Israeli strike on Beirut came just a week after a similar escalation that triggered the most serious exchange of fire since the fragile ceasefire took effect.
There was no immediate comment from the White House on Sunday’s strikes. However, Trump had earlier urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to scale back attacks on Lebanon while negotiations were at a sensitive stage, though Netanyahu has reportedly continued military operations.
Pakistan intensifies diplomatic engagement
Meanwhile, Pakistan has stepped up diplomatic outreach as momentum builds around the potential agreement.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held separate telephone conversations on Saturday with his Turkish and Egyptian counterparts, discussing the evolving regional situation and progress toward a possible US-Iran understanding.
The Foreign Office said Dar and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan reviewed regional developments and welcomed encouraging progress toward an understanding between Washington and Tehran.

Both sides expressed hope that the developments would pave the way for lasting peace and stability in the region and agreed to remain in close contact as the situation evolves.
In a separate call, Dar and Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr Badr Abdelatty discussed the latest regional developments, including progress toward a US-Iran understanding.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both sides expressed optimism that the process could contribute to lasting peace, security and stability across the region.
The latest diplomatic contacts followed an earlier conversation between Dar and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, reflecting coordinated regional engagement aimed at supporting the emerging diplomatic track.

Uncertainty persists over final agreement
Despite growing diplomatic activity and optimism from some quarters, uncertainty continues over the timing and final shape of the agreement.
While Pakistan has described the deal as being close to finalisation, Iranian officials have maintained that no final decision has been taken.
The proposed framework has reportedly been facilitated through multiple regional channels, focusing on ending hostilities, reopening key maritime routes including the Strait of Hormuz, and establishing a broader roadmap for de-escalation between Washington and Tehran.
Iranian officials have reiterated that parts of the draft text remain under review at political, legal and technical levels, while internal debate continues over its strategic implications.
At the same time, continued Israeli military activity in Lebanon and broader regional tensions have added further uncertainty to an already fragile diplomatic process.
Despite the competing narratives, regional mediators remain engaged in efforts to prevent escalation and keep negotiations on track, with further developments expected in the coming days.
