PM underscores role of 'strong security' in national development ahead of budget

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday underscored the necessity of robust national security while reflecting on the challenges involved in crafting the latest federal budget.

His remarks came during a federal cabinet meeting that formally approved the budget ahead of its parliamentary presentation. "Today, we are presenting our government's third budget," the premier stated.

"Preparing this budget certainly came with enormous challenges. I firmly believe no nation can manage its affairs, let alone advance, without ironclad and unshakeable security," the prime minister said.

He further urged accelerated efforts toward building water reservoirs, dams, and domestically sourced energy solutions, specifically mentioning solar panels, wind power, and battery storage.

The prime minister noted that the federal government had maintained "comprehensive dialogue" with all four provinces over the preceding six weeks, keeping them informed about the Centre's additional financial requirements. He described the provincial consultations as "very meaningful."

Acknowledging past hardships, he admitted that despite sincere efforts, the government was compelled to introduce taxes in the previous two budgets to meet national obligations and IMF conditions, aiming to stabilise the economy and unlock growth opportunities.

"The common citizen undeniably bore significant hardship because of this. On my own behalf and that of the cabinet, I thank Pakistan's 240 million people for enduring inflation with remarkable patience," he said.

PM Shehbaz highlighted that inflation had fallen from 38 percent to single digits over two years, though it edged upward recently due to Middle East tensions. Similarly, the policy rate dropped from 22.5 percent to 11 percent before being revised upward following the US-Iran conflict's economic ripple effects.

"Our economy is stable today. This third budget, paired with collective round-the-clock dedication and a shared sense of responsibility, should accelerate our economic momentum," he emphasised.

Opening his address on a solemn note, the premier revealed he had attended funeral prayers for security personnel, including two Christian soldiers, killed in the line of duty.

"It was a deeply harrowing scene that moved everyone to tears," he said, recalling his personal meeting with the bereaved families.
