 LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Thursday directed authorities to ensure the provision of cold drinking water for the public across the province in view of the ongoing severe heatwave.

She instructed the district administrations to set up shaded waiting areas at major squares and intersections in all cities, and directed officials to ensure availability of cold drinking water, fans and air coolers at wagon stands, bus terminals and railway stations for commuters.

The chief minister also ordered that visitors to government offices be provided with cold drinking water and other basic facilities to help them cope with extreme weather conditions.

Appealing to the public, Maryam Nawaz urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and outdoor activities during periods of intense heat and hot winds, stressing the need for precautionary measures to protect vulnerable groups, including women, children and senior citizens.

She further directed that students and teachers attending summer camps in schools be provided with cold drinking water, fans and air coolers to ensure a safer learning environment during the heatwave.

“Preventive measures and caution are the most effective means of coping with extreme heat and high temperatures,” the chief minister said.

Maryam Nawaz also directed traffic police not to stop motorcyclists unnecessarily under the scorching sun, and instructed that special care be taken to avoid halting motorcycles carrying families or children in direct sunlight unless absolutely necessary.
