Three arrested over Jhang college student’s death; gang rape suspected

TOBA TEK SINGH: Police in Jhang have arrested three suspects in connection with the kidnapping and death of a first-year college student, while investigators are examining allegations that she was sexually assaulted before being taken to hospital.

Jhang District Police Officer Sajid Hussain took notice of the case and constituted a special team, which later arrested the three men. Police also seized the vehicle in which the victim was brought to a private hospital. The teenager, aged 17, had been admitted in critical condition on June 7 after being dropped off by people who then left the hospital. She was later identified by police.

A kidnapping case had already been registered at Satellite Town Police Station. The statement of the main suspect said the girl’s condition suddenly worsened and she was shifted to hospital for treatment. The investigation is continuing to establish the full circumstances of the case.

DPO Sajid Hussain said all aspects of the incident were being reviewed carefully and evidence was being collected. The girl was allegedly gang-raped by the three suspects after being abducted and was kept at a relative’s house belonging to the main suspect. She was administered ice, after which her condition deteriorated, and that she was taken to hospital unconscious.

Students stage protest at DHQ hospital

In a separate development in Jhang, students of the Nursing College and the Midwifery and LHV School held a demonstration at the DHQ hospital over what they described as humiliation and misbehaviour by attendants of people injured in an accident three days earlier.

The protesting students told reporters they were not directly responsible for patient care and were assigned only to assist doctors and nurses as part of their training. They said they had already submitted a written complaint to the medical superintendent but no action had been taken.

Assistant Commissioner Rab Nawaz later visited the hospital and assured the students that a transparent inquiry would be conducted and action taken accordingly. The students then ended their protest.

Woman killed in Khanewal road accident

In Mian Channu tehsil of Khanewal, a woman was killed and her husband seriously injured when a speeding tractor-trolley ran over their motorcycle near Chak 15 railway crossing. The deceased was identified as Irshad Bibi, 50, while the injured man was identified as Abdul Khaliqdad, 52.

Bus catches fire near Shorkot on M-4

Also on Tuesday, a passenger bus travelling from Karachi to Islamabad caught fire near Shorkot on the M-4 motorway due to a short circuit, according to a spokesperson for the National Highway and Motorway Police.

The spokesperson said the motorway patrol team evacuated all 34 passengers, staff and their luggage, and no injuries were reported. The Motorway Police, Rescue 1122 and Frontier Works Organisation staff then jointly brought the fire under control. The bus was completely destroyed.
