Gomal University under spotlight in fake degrees case

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: A major academic fraud case has emerged at Gomal University, where an internal audit by the current administration identified 514 suspected fake degrees issued between 2019 and 2023, prompting suspensions and a high-level investigation.

The audit detected significant irregularities in academic records and led to recommendations that hundreds of questionable degrees be cancelled. Acting on directions of the university Syndicate, the former director of affiliations has been suspended, while disciplinary action has also been started against the former controller of examinations.

The inquiry is continuing and that more officials may face action as the investigation proceeds. Alongside the degree scandal, the university is also facing allegations of financial mismanagement and embezzlement. A high-powered inquiry committee has been formed to examine those claims in detail, with the scope of the probe widened substantially.

Minister vows accountability

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Higher Education Mina Khan Afridi said those found involved in the scandal would be held accountable and that the government would take action over the matter. "No one implicated in the Gomal University scandal will be spared. Strict action will be taken against individuals who compromised students' futures."

Afridi also reaffirmed the provincial government's commitment to eliminating corruption and fake degree rackets from the higher education sector. He said oversight mechanisms were being strengthened across universities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to promote transparency, merit and accountability.

The investigation remains under way, and further arrests and disciplinary measures are expected as additional evidence emerges during the ongoing inquiry.
