ISLAMABAD: The administration of US President Donald Trump has proposed additional tariffs of 10 per cent or 12.5 per cent on imports from 60 economies after concluding that their failure to curb trade in goods made with forced labour is unreasonable and restricts US commerce.
According to the US Trade Representative’s office, the proposal is part of findings released under a Section 301 investigation into unfair trade practices. The move comes as the Trump administration seeks to rebuild emergency tariffs that were struck down by a US Supreme Court decision in February.
The USTR said it had decided to apply 10 per cent duties linked to the forced-labour investigation on imports from a group of economies that includes Pakistan, Canada, Ecuador, the European Union, Indonesia, Mexico, Argentina and Bangladesh, among others.
5 per cent rate, but said the proposed measures cover 60 economies in total.
