KARACHI: A man was killed and a passer-by injured when armed assailants opened fire on a van in the Manghopir area on Tuesday, while in a separate incident a suspected robber was shot dead in what police described as an encounter in Korangi.

According to police, the shooting in Manghopir took place near Hamdard University. The deceased was identified as 45-year-old Shaukat Ali, while the injured man was named as 40-year-old Mohammed Arif.

West SSP Tariq Illahi Mastoi said Ali was transporting fertiliser in a van when attackers travelling in an Alto car intercepted him at around 10:50am. He said the gunmen opened fire and fled the scene. Ali sustained critical bullet wounds and died, while Arif, who was passing through the area at the time, was also hit in the firing.

Police said officers reached the spot after receiving information, cordoned off the area and gathered evidence. SSP Mastoi said the attack appeared to stem from personal enmity, but did not share further details. The body and the injured man were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

Korangi encounter

In another incident early Tuesday morning, Awami Colony police said a suspected robber was killed during an alleged encounter on the main road near Taj Gabol Goth in Korangi.

Police said they signalled two pillion riders to stop, but the suspects allegedly opened fire, triggering an exchange of gunfire. During the shootout, one of the armed men, identified as Sameer Riaz, was killed.

Police said they recovered a pistol, a motorcycle and a cell phone from his possession. They also claimed that the dead suspect had a criminal record, with 14 FIRs registered against him at different police stations in Karachi. His body was shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities.
