Sindh rejects Indian claim over Mohenjo daro heritage

ISLAMABAD: The Sindh government has rejected a claim by India’s ministry of culture regarding Mohenjo daro, with Sindh Culture and Tourism Minister Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah saying any attempt to alter the site’s historical identity is unacceptable.

Shah said efforts to misrepresent the history of Mohenjo-daro run against academic and cultural integrity. He said the archaeological site is an integral part of the cultural heritage of Sindh and Pakistan, and added that presenting the Indus Valley Civilization as the exclusive legacy of any one country does not align with historical facts.

The minister said Mohenjo daro is a major archaeological site recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, and said its identity and historical importance are not in dispute. He also said artifacts unearthed there, including the famous Dancing Girl, form part of Sindh’s cultural heritage.

Shah said the Indus Valley Civilization predates the creation of modern nation-states by thousands of years, and added that the Sindh government rejects any Indian attempt to exclusively claim or associate the heritage of Mohenjo-daro with itself.
