Sindh minister calls for collective efforts to protect heritage on World Heritage Day

KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Culture, Tourism and Antiquities Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah has called for joint efforts to preserve cultural heritage, saying its protection is a shared responsibility, in his message issued on World Heritage Day.

He said Sindh is home to some of the world’s oldest civilisations and stressed that its historical legacy must be safeguarded for future generations. Referring to major heritage landmarks in the province, the minister said Mohenjo-daro and Makli Necropolis are symbols of pride and identity for Sindh.

Shah said the restoration of ancient archaeological sites and historic landmarks remains among the provincial government’s top priorities. He added that work is under way to provide facilities meeting international standards at heritage sites in an effort to promote tourism.

On cultural preservation, the minister said the inclusion of the traditional musical instrument Borundo in UNESCO’s cultural listings is an important achievement for Sindh. He also said the government is pursuing conservation and renovation work at forts, shrines and historic buildings across the province.

According to the minister, the provincial government is also working with international archaeologists to further explore Sindh’s heritage. He added that steps are being introduced in educational institutions to help younger generations connect with their cultural roots.

Shah said the promotion of culture, tourism and antiquities remains part of the broader vision of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

World Heritage Day and Sindh’s historical legacy

World Heritage Day, established by UNESCO, is observed every year on April 18. The occasion is marked globally to raise awareness about the importance of cultural heritage and the need to preserve it.

In his message for the day, the minister linked the observance to Sindh’s historical significance and the need for continued protection of its archaeological and cultural assets. He said preserving these sites and traditions is essential for passing on the province’s legacy to future generations.

The minister’s remarks highlighted both physical conservation and cultural continuity, including restoration of historic places, improvement of visitor facilities and educational initiatives aimed at strengthening awareness among the youth.

He also underscored the significance of internationally recognised heritage and cultural listings, pointing to Borundo’s inclusion in UNESCO’s cultural listings as a milestone for the province. Alongside this, he reiterated the importance of preserving well-known sites such as Mohenjo-daro and Makli Necropolis, which he described as central to Sindh’s identity.

Shah’s message on World Heritage Day focused on preservation, tourism development and cultural awareness, while reaffirming the provincial government’s stated commitment to conserving archaeological sites, shrines, forts and other historic structures throughout Sindh.
