Celebrity haircuts spark wider debate on choice and beauty standards
A social media debate over actresses adopting short hairstyles has widened into a broader discussion about beauty standards, personal choice and public scrutiny of women in Pakistan’s entertainment industry.

ISLAMABAD: A fresh round of discussion over women’s appearance in Pakistan’s entertainment industry has unfolded on social media after actor Alizeh Shah urged followers not to cut their hair simply because celebrities were doing so, reigniting a broader debate about personal choice, beauty norms and the influence of public figures on young audiences.
The conversation gathered pace after Alizeh posted an Instagram story warning fans against following short-hair trends set by actresses. She argued that many celebrities have access to wigs, extensions and professional styling, while ordinary people may take years to regrow their hair. In the same post, she described very short haircuts as a kind of self-harm, a remark that quickly split online users between those who viewed it as practical advice and those who considered it excessive.
Her comments also prompted criticism because some social media users pointed out that Alizeh herself had previously worn a similar look in the drama Tanaa Banaa, where her bob haircut had drawn attention among younger viewers. Some accused her of denouncing a style she had once helped make popular, while others said her views may have changed with time.
Short-hair trend gains momentum
The debate had already been building in recent weeks after Hania Aamir shared photographs on Instagram showing a cropped hairstyle. Her post carried the caption psychologically fascinating and also referenced Meryl Streep’s character in The Devil Wears Prada with the phrase That’s All. The images quickly drew comparisons with other actors, including Sajal Aly and Saboor Aly, who have also recently appeared with shorter hairstyles.
Supporters described Hania’s new look as a bold departure from the long-haired image often associated with mainstream television actresses. Makeup artists, musicians and fellow performers praised the change in the comments, while others focused on interpreting the meaning of her caption and film reference.
The presentation of the photographs also drew attention. Rather than a highly polished glamour shoot, the actor appeared in more relaxed settings, including a bathroom mirror selfie with damp cropped hair and a cream-toned robe. That softer visual style made the transformation appear more immediate and personal to many viewers.
As more actresses adopted similar looks, social media users began referring to the emerging cluster as showbiz’s short hair gang. The trend, however, also highlighted the degree to which women in entertainment continue to face scrutiny over their appearance, with image often becoming closely tied to identity.
Saheefa Jabbar Khattak questions scrutiny
Actor Saheefa Jabbar Khattak addressed that criticism directly in a video message about reactions to her own haircut. She questioned why women are repeatedly expected to explain personal decisions that men make without attracting similar attention.
She asked:
Would you ever ask a male actor, your father or your brother why they got a haircut?
Saheefa said women are constantly questioned about matters ranging from clothing and education to marriage and careers, and argued that the issue was not really about hair alone but about a wider social tendency to police women’s choices under the cover of public commentary.
She also said much of the backlash had come from women, adding that she found it difficult to understand why online discussion remained focused on haircuts while the country faced more serious issues. She remarked:
Hair is not the discussion right now
Nostalgia also entered the debate when Javeria Saud shared an old photograph of herself wearing short hair years before such looks became a social media trend. In her caption, she wrote, When your teenage haircut becomes today’s trend, and said the image reminded her of simple times, natural beauty, and memories that still feel so alive.
The discussion around celebrity haircuts has since moved beyond fashion alone, touching on autonomy, femininity, public image and the pressure that famous personalities can place on audiences who may seek to imitate them.
