KARACHI: A newly married couple were shot dead in Karachi’s Malir area on Monday shortly after appearing before a local court, according to police.

Korangi Senior Superintendent of Police Fida Hussain Janwari said the couple were returning from court when attackers who had been following their car opened fire on them in the Saudabad locality. He said the woman’s family had earlier filed a complaint at Sachal Police Station over her disappearance, but the woman later told the Malir court that she had married of her own free will.

Janwari said the man and woman sustained critical wounds and died at the scene. He added that the suspected attackers had been identified as the woman’s relatives and that efforts were under way to arrest them.

Police Surgeon Dr Sumaiyya Syed said the victims were a 26-year-old husband and his 20-year-old wife. She said both had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and were brought dead to hospital.
