Hotter-than-usual weather expected till July

LAHORE: The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has cautioned that temperatures are expected to remain above normal in parts of the province through May, June and July, while several areas may also receive rain during the same period, raising the risk of heatwaves, flash floods, urban flooding and windstorms.

According to the PDMA’s seasonal weather outlook, northern and north-western Punjab are likely to receive above-normal rainfall over the three-month period. Eastern Punjab, however, may see slightly below-normal rainfall, while central Punjab is expected to record near-normal precipitation.

The authority has issued an advisory to a range of provincial departments and officials, including divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, police, WASA and Rescue 1122, asking them to prepare for possible weather-related emergencies.

The PDMA also warned that most districts of Punjab could face heatwave conditions and above-normal temperatures from May 7 to 11. It said the increase in temperatures could also lead to strong winds, dust storms and hailstorms, which may affect seasonal crops, vegetables and orchards.

Farmers have been advised to stay informed about weather advisories before carrying out irrigation and harvesting activities.

Heat and rain-related risks highlighted

The authority said above-normal temperatures during May could raise the chances of heat spikes and heatwave conditions, particularly in the plain areas of Punjab, even though increased rainfall is also forecast.

It further warned that heavy rainfall could heighten the danger of flash floods and landslides in mountainous and flood-prone areas. In major cities, the advisory said, urban flooding may occur, especially in low-lying neighbourhoods and places with poor drainage.

The PDMA also noted that rising temperatures, particularly in southern parts of the province, could increase the risk of vector-borne diseases such as dengue.

Preparedness measures ordered

In line with directives issued by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the PDMA has directed all relevant departments to complete advance preparedness measures to deal with any emergency situation that may arise during the coming months.

PDMA Director-General Umar Javed urged the public to take precautionary steps during severe weather. He advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during heatwaves, drink more water and keep children and elderly people away from direct sunlight.
