Man accused of threatening US consulate in Karachi gets bail

KARACHI: A judicial magistrate has granted bail to a man arrested in a case related to an alleged threat to bomb the United States consulate general in Karachi.

The suspect, identified as Sharjeel Akbar, had been taken into custody and booked under Sections 506-B and 504 of the Pakistan Penal Code, along with Section 25-D of the Telegraph Act.

According to the first information report, the case was registered at the Docks police station on the complaint of an inspector of the Foreign Security Cell. The complainant stated that he was posted at the US consulate and that on April 15, consulate staff informed him they had received a threatening phone call.

The caller, the FIR said, identified himself as Sharjeel Akbar and claimed that he had planted a bomb near the consulate.

Police later arrested the suspect on West Wharf Road during a search operation. Following his arrest, he was sent to prison on judicial remand.

Bail application

The accused subsequently filed an application before Judicial Magistrate (West) Inamullah Phulpoto, seeking post-arrest bail in the case.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the magistrate allowed the application and ordered his release against a surety bond of Rs30,000 along with a personal recognisance bond.

In the order, the court observed that the prosecution had not placed enough material before it to warrant the suspect’s continued detention.

The magistrate further noted that, on a tentative assessment of the available record, the case did not yet show firm evidence against the accused.

The order means the suspect will remain on bail while the case proceeds further in accordance with law.

The FIR alleges that the threatening call was conveyed to the complainant by consulate staff, after which legal proceedings were initiated and the suspect was later arrested.

The case concerns alleged criminal intimidation, intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace, and causing annoyance under the relevant legal provisions cited in the FIR.
