ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday launched the PM Apna Ghar Programme, under which housing loans of up to Rs10 million will be provided on easy instalments across the country.
Addressing the launch ceremony in Islamabad, the prime minister said the scheme would be implemented in the federal capital, all four provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. He said 500,000 housing units would be built under the programme, which carries a total allocation of Rs3.2 trillion.
According to the prime minister, the loans will be repayable over 20 years. He said the markup would be 5 per cent during the first 10 years, while for the following 10 years it would be charged at the market rate applicable at that time.
Shehbaz Sharif said the government had set a first-year target of financing 50,000 houses and earmarked Rs321 billion for that purpose. He added that the scheme would allow the construction of housing units of up to 10 marla.
The prime minister said he would personally review the programme every month to remove shortcomings and ensure timely payments.
Relief package and international support
Alongside the housing initiative, the prime minister referred to the PM Fuel Package 2026, under which Rs1.2 billion has been disbursed digitally to more than 32,000 beneficiaries. He said the recipients include operators of buses, trucks, long-haul vehicles and delivery vans.
The initiative is aimed at providing relief in the face of rising fuel costs.
Separately, the European Investment Bank’s international development arm, EIB Global, is committing a total of €160 million to support the reconstruction of homes in Sindh and improve water quality in Karachi, the country’s largest city.
The launch of the housing programme adds a new federal initiative focused on home construction and financing, with the government setting out its targets for the first year as well as the broader scale of the scheme. The programme covers all federating units and territories mentioned by the prime minister, and sets a ceiling for the size of housing units to be built under it.
The government has also linked the announcement with other relief and development measures, including digital fuel support for transport-related beneficiaries and external financing for housing reconstruction and water-related improvements.
