New Zealand updates skilled migrant resident visa rules for 2026

New Zealand has introduced updated guidelines for its Skilled Migrant Resident Visa, outlining revised eligibility criteria, application process and assessment requirements for foreign workers.

Under the new framework, applicants are assessed through a points-based system that evaluates factors such as qualifications, work experience, age and job offers in New Zealand. Priority is given to candidates with skills in sectors facing labour shortages.

Authorities said applicants must typically secure a job offer from an accredited employer before applying. The role must meet specified salary thresholds and align with recognised skill levels.

Candidates are also required to meet English language requirements, health standards and character checks. Supporting documents such as educational qualifications and employment records must be verified during the process.

Officials said the updated visa settings are aimed at attracting skilled professionals who can contribute to the country’s economy while ensuring a structured and transparent immigration process.

Successful applicants are granted residency status, allowing them to live, work and study in New Zealand on a long-term basis, with a pathway to permanent residency and citizenship subject to meeting further conditions.
